Research Paper : Effects of Walnut Extracts on Histopathological Change on Atopic Dermatitis in Mice Induced by DNCB
Yoon Mi Sook
Abstract
While the cause of atopic dermatitis is not fully understood, it is believed that complex interactions of several factors such as genes we inherit, where we live, a breakdown of the outermost layer of skin, and a malfunctioning immune system lead to atopic dermatitis. However, it has been strongly suggested that atopic dermatitis is due to an epiphenomena of immunologic aberrations, distinctively to a genetically predisposed population. Especially, this expression of polygenic and phenotypic immunologic aberrations, with the potential for producing a spectrum of inflammatory reactions, would be initiated by the cytokinal profile altered by Th1/Th2-cell unbalance. In addition, the main skin-lesions and histological changes in atopic dermatitis caused by DNCB were monitored and compared. In a view of observational lesions such as hemorrhage, erythema, scaling, excoriation and dryness, they were slightly attenuated by the application of walnut extracts to skin with atopic dermatitis. Especially, the highest amount of walnut extracts was predominantly effective on the lesions such as hemorrhage and erythema compared to other kinds of lesions. In the skin from DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis, various histological changes such as epidermis hyperplasia, thickened dermis and cellurality in dermis were markedly observed. It was assumed that especially, thickened dermis and cellurality in dermis would be caused by infiltration of various leucocytes such as neutrophils, monocytes and eosinophile which cause the inflammatory response resulting in observational lesions. However, epidermis hyperplasia, thickened dermis and cellurality in dermis were attenuated by the application of walnut extracts to skin with atopic dermatitis. This study, thus, it is assumed that the effects of walnut extracts on skin from DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis.
