Recearch Paper : The Significance and the Effective Utilization of Daegu International Bodypainting Festival in Improvement of the Brand-image of the Daegu City

Abstract
Daegu International Body-painting Festival (DIBF) is a performing arts festival, where various performances and contests on body painting harmonized, that was held for the very first time in Korea at Daegu in 2008. This thesis intends to present ways in which the DIBF could contribute in creating synergetic effect with the Daegu City`s slogan "Colorful Daegu", by studying the present condition and characteristics of DIBF. The present conditions of 2010 DIBF are as follows: First, DIBF is an art festival, where body painting`s colorful artistry is enjoyed by many people. A body painting articulates the expressions of visual sensibility through a balance of splendid colors. Fully utilizing such characteristic of a body painting, we can build the image of "Passion of Colors: Daegu", using colors to express its imagination, creativity, and artistry. Second, DIBF is an art festival that centers about a body. A body recreates its identity when it is altered and recomposed through body painting. Body painting functions to focus on the festivity and accords coessentiality in the festival. Thirdly, DIBF realizes performance as the arts in a general sense. Body painting holds a characteristic of recreation that is completed when the model, or the performer, whose body has been used as a tool for the artist to express his/her art, performs variously. The significance of DIBF and the proposals are the following: Body painting has expanded its base and has proven its potential as one of tourist attractions and has been assessed as "mostly successful". Especially, the DIBF was applauded for its potential to become Daegu`s representative carnival because of its it coincided well with the city`s colorful concept and the slogan "Colorful City: Daegu". However, in order for DIBF to be developed into not only as Daegu`s regional festival, but as national, and furthermore as global culture and arts festival, there are rooms for improvement. First of all, we need apply a ``story-telling`` method to "body painting festival" to give meaning of a festival that can vitalize brand image of Daegu City. Secondly, to become a successful regional festival, supplementing the festival`s content to be altered from "a passive cultural festival to "a participatory cultural festival". Thirdly, we need to provide the citizens the gastronomic delight with a variety of eateries. Finally, the development and the sales of a product that can lead to an economic effect are necessary.
