Research Paper : The Effects of Extracts from Mulberry (Morus alba) Leaves and Branches on UVB-induced Skin Damage

Abstract
This research was carried to analyse the effects of mulberry leaves and branches extracts on mice skin tissue exposed to UVB. Mice skins was treated with water extract and ethanol extract from mulberry leaves and branches after UVB irradiation. External morphology, tissue, master cells, and activities of SOD and GST were analysed. The results were follows. The hyperkeratosis war observed in mice skins exposed to UVB. And then number of granular cell layer showed 4~5 layers increase in mouse skin of group treated with water extract and ethanol extract from mulberry leaves after UVB exposure. Also, epidermal layers showed to about 9~12 layers increase over control group. Meanwhile, the nuclear were hyperchromatic, large in size, and active cell division. The dermal layer showed hypertrophy with significant increase of collagenous fiber. The number of mast cell were increased significantly in group (7,278 ea/cm2) treated with extracts of mulberry leaves and branches, compared to normal group (2,778 ea/cm2). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (3.47 unit/mg) was higher in group treated with water extract from mulberry leaf than in control group (2.5 unit/mg) after of UVB irradiation. Glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activity (5.9 n mole/mg) was higher in group than in control group (3.3 n mole/mg). These results showed that extracts of mulberry leaves and branches had significant anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects Therefore these extracts from mulberry leaves and branches might be good material skin for skin care and health.
