Abstract
This study was designed to examine the chemical composition of essential oil and the in vitro antibacterial and antioxidative activities of essential oils of palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini) and geranium (Pelargonium graveolens). HPLC analysis on XBridge C18 revealed that palmarosa predominantly contained geraniol (72.55%) geranyl acetate (25.6%) and geranium contained geraniol (46.27%), citronellol (30.44%) and geranyl acetate (1.87%). Antimicrobial activity of essential oils of palmarosa and geranium were tested against Candia albicans, Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by paper disc method. Palamrosa and geraniol exhibited the high anibacterial activity against C. albicans and P. acnes at concentrations of 1% and 10%, respectively but geranium inhibited C. albicans and P. acnes at 10% only. At 10% concentration, palmarosa showed higher antibacterial activity than geranium and geraniol showed the highest activity against S. aureus. Antibacterial activity against E.coli was revealed in palmarosa and geraniol at concentrations of 1% and 10% and no activity in geranium and citronellol. Antioxidative activity was examined by scavenging effect of palmarosa, geranium and their major constituents. Geranim revealed more antioxidative activity than palmarosa at every concentration and geranium had a higher antioxidative activity than ascorbic acid as a positive control at 10% concentration. Our results suggested that palmasora, geranium and geraniol as their major component possessed antibacterial and antioxidative activity and these results will be a basis for the development of cosmetology in skin care and improvement of skin problem.
Key Words: Palmarosa, Geranium, Aromatherapy, Antibacterial activity, Antioxidative activity
