Ju Youn Kim
Abstract
This study investigated 205 estheticians working in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do by means of a questionnaire with a view to finding out how an esthetician`s emotional labor influences burnout. The result of the study is as follows: First, the study revealed that estheticians were experiencing greater levels of emotional labor than average: emotional restraint (M=4.09) was the greatest factor in terms of emotional labor; emotional exhaustion (M=4.06) was the factor greatest in terms of burnout. Second, estheticians with three to five years of experience experienced the greatest emotional labor and burnout (F=4.276, p<.01). The type of work didn`t make much difference in terms of the degree of emotional labor experienced among the estheticians, but the estheticians working for skin clinics attached to hospitals experienced the greatest burnout in terms of emotional exhaustion (F=4.646, p<.05). Third, the estheticians` emotional labor and emotional exhaustion causing burnout showed a positive (+) correlation; emotional restraint and emotional dissonance had a positive correlation with a feeling of depersonalized relations with customers and feelings of emotional restraint and lack of expression positively correlated to a sense of a lack of individual of accomplishment in relation to burnout. Fourth, the study also showed that estheticians` emotional labors affected burnout: the greater the emotional dissonance was and the lower emotional restraint was, the higher was the incidence of burnout; the greater emotional confusion was, the higher was the incidence of burnout associated with emotional exhaustion the greater emotional confusion was, the higher was the feeling of depersonalized relations with customers; the lower the emotional restraint was and the higher the emotional confusion was, the higher was the feeling of burnout associated with a sense of a lack of individual accomplishment. The conclusion can be summarized as follows: estheticians go through a high degree of emotional labor and burnout while they work on the spot and it has been confirmed that their emotional labor influences their burnout.
