Effect of Myofascial Massage and High Frequency Treatment on Middle Aged Women`s Abdominal Obesity

Abstract

This study was conducted to confirm the influence of myofascial massage and high frequency treatment upon the middle aged women`s abdominal obesity in the waist and hip circumference, body composition and blood components. The 14 volunteers corresponding to 35- 50 years old had overweight in more than 23 kg/m2 of BMI(Body Mass Index) and 0.85 in the abdominal fat rate (wast-hip ratio, WHR). They were randomly divided into two groups of the myofascial manual massage and high frequency treatment. Each group was treated totally 10 times for 5 weeks with twice a week, respectively. As a result of myofascial massage, the weight, waist and hip circumference, BMI, WHR, body fat amount, body fat rate, and visceral fat reduced effectively compared to the size before the massage (p<0.01). As a result of high frequency treatment, the weight, waist and hip circumference, BMI, WHR, body fat amount, and visceral fat reduced effectively compared to the size before the treatmen (p<0.01). Comparing between the differences of before and after final myofascial massage and the differences of before and after final high frequency treatment, the myofascial massage was more effective in reducing waist circumference, body fat rate, and triglyceride compared to high frequency treatment (p<0.1). In the above results, the myofascial massage was proved to be more effective method than high frequency treatment in reducing waist circumference, body fat rate and triglyceride compared to high frequency treatment. This could be utilized as a guideline of obesity management program.
