Research Paper : Anti-oxidative Activities and Melanin Synthesis Inhibition of Smilax china Folium Ethanol Extract

Abstract
The control of melanogenesis is an important strategy in the treatment of abnormal skin pigmentation for cosmetic purposes. The aim of the current study is to investigate the anti-oxidative and anti-melanogenesis effect of Smiax china (S. china). S. china extracted with 70% ethanol was tested for safety by cell viability assay and closed patch test, anti-oxidative effect by measurement of DPPH and SO scavenging and anti-melanogenesis effect by the abilities to inhibit tyrosinase activity and DOPA oxidation in the cell-free mushroom tyrosinase assay and to inhibit melanin synthesis in B16F10 murine melanoma cells and morphological change observation. In result, S. china ethanolic extract showed high cell viability and no skin disorder such as swelling, erythema and allergy, and had about 70% scavenging effect of DPPH and SO in concentration of 75
