Research Paper : Physical and Chemical Changes of Dark Brown and Blonde Hair in Accordance with the Processing Time of Permanent Wave
Eun Jeong Choi, Sang Mo Kang
Abstract
The following are the major findings of the analysis in this study: In the comparative analysis of the changes in the chemical structure and morphology of DBH and BH when the treatment time of permanent wave was variable, the thickness of hair was decreased more for BH after 60 minutes of treatment, the O.D. value for absorbance was increased more for DBH, and the tensile strength decreased more for BH. In the optical microscopic observation, DBH and BH were damaged similarly after the permanent wave. In the FE-SEM observation, BH showed more widening, severe cracking, and breaking off of scale after 60 minutes of treatment. In the change in the efficiency of permanent wave, DBH showed much better efficiency and the curls lasted longer based on the number of shampooing. Therefore, it was found that hair damage by the chemical treatment of permanent wave is unavoidable, but 40 minutes of treatment can minimize damage for DBH and BH can create the desired curls with minimal changes in chemical structure and morphological damage when treated for 60 minutes as it has lower curling strength than DBH does.
Key Words: Dark brown, Blonde, Hair, Permanent wave, Curling
