Research Paper : A Comparative Study of Anti-oxidant Effect and Cell Proliferation Effect based on Extraction Method of Natural Substances
Hyeon Sook Hwang, Gum Dan Park
Abstract
The objective of this study lies in proposing the most effective method among effective components extraction methods of natural substances and examining its industrial application to functional cosmetics, etc. Natural substances used in the study were Eclipa prostrata L., Morus alba extract, and Thuja orientalis Linn. Hot water extraction, distillation & extraction, organic solvent (ethanol) extraction, ultrasonic (ethanol) extraction, and ultrasonic (water) extraction method were used as effective component extraction methods. In regards to each extract, a study on cell proliferation effect and anti-oxidant effect was conducted through MTT assay and DPPH radical elimination activation experiment respectively. HaCaT keratinocytes was used as a cell strain in MTT assay. DPPH experiment was conducted based on the method by Lu and Foo and the absorbance was measured at 517nm. In regards to cell proliferation effect through MTT assay, it was the highest in ultrasonic (ethanol) extract for all three types.
Key Words: Eclipa prostrata L., Mulberry root extract, Oriental arbor vitae, Ultrasonic extraction method, Anti-oxidant effect
