Effectiveness Assessment of Water-extract of Some Esculent Plants Based on Functional Compounds and Physiological Activity

Abstract
Researches about various effective or functional compounds for cosmetics and human skin health have been performed and some of their results were applied to cosmetic production. In this study, the usefulness of water extract of mistletoe (Viscum album), white radish (Raphanus sativus), native mulberry (Cudrania tricuspidata), thistle (Cirsium setidens), and dandelion (Traxacum platycarpum) as a material for cosmetics based on contents of polyphenol and flavonoid, and activity for radical-scavenging, collagenase inhibition, elastase inhibition, and tyrosinase inhibition was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed and compared. Extract of all materials was precisely adjusted to 20% (w/v) for quantitative comparison of each effective compound from each material. Polyphenol in the extract of R. sativus and C. tricuspidata were approximately 2,226 mg/kg and 2,538mg/kg, respectively, which were relatively higher than others. Flavonoid in the extract of R. sativus was approximately 188 mg/kg which was relatively higher than others. Radical (DPPH and ABTS)- scavenging activity of the extract of R. sativus, C. tricuspidata, T. platycarpum was approximately 2 times higher than others. Meanwhile, collagenase and elastase inhibition activities of C. setidens extract were approximately 123% and 126%, respectively, and tyrosinase inhibition activity of R. sativus was approximately 1,726% and 1,260%, respectively. On the basis of these results, extract from each material is required to be combined for making of multi-functional cosmetics.
