Effects of Complex Trigger Point Management on Scoliosis and Facial Asymmetry
Won Sook Lee, Yong Hwan Lee
Abstract
The number of adolescents having scoliosis and facial asymmetry has recently been on the increase. This study aimed to determine the effects of complex trigger point management, as a means of scoliosis management, on facial asymmetry. Eighteen twelfth-graders who were vocational high school students residing in Busan were treated with ten sessions of complex trigger point management -a session per week -on their back, excepting the face, from April to June 2015; then, moire equipment was used to measure the horizontal and vertical angle of the upper and lower back as well as the angle of the eyes, the lips, and the jaw. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, repeated measure ANOVA, paired t-test, and regression analysis. After the ten sessions of treatment, the horizontal angle of the upper and lower back became more horizontal and the vertical angle of the upper and lower back became more vertical (p<0.01). The angle of the eyes and the lip became more horizontal and that of the jaw became more vertical (p<0.01). As for the effects of correction of the angle of the back on facial asymmetry, the better the vertical angle of the upper back was corrected, the smaller the angle of the eyes became. To put the results together, complex trigger point management was effective in correcting scoliosis and facial asymmetry.
