Physical and Chemical Changes in Hair Associated with Repeated Treatment of Non-oxidative Permanent Hair Colors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to measure physical and chemical changes in hair associated with non-oxidative hair colors. Tensile strength, elongation, and hair cuticle by a low vacuum scanning electron microscope(LV-SEM) and an atomic force microscopy(AFM) were observed. The following conclusions were drawn. First, Sample 1 and Sample 2 showed more increased tensile strength and elongation than S0. The tensile strength and elongation of Sample 1 became higher with increased treatment than those of Sample 2. Second, according to the LV-SEM measurement, the hair surface of S1-5 and S2-5 had tidier hair cuticle and more decreased lifting with increased application. Sample 1 showed more smooth scale with repeated treatment and hair damage was minimized compared with Sample 2. Third, according to the AFM measurement, the sample hair of all experience groups became generally smoother compared with S0. Sample 1 had decreased numerical value with repeated treatment compared with Sample 2. The findings of the study suggest that non-oxidative hair coloring contributed to a tidier and more closed hair cuticle and was effective for minimized hair damage. If antioxidant and moisture elements are added to non-oxidative hair colors, the advantages of non-oxidative hair colors will be maximized. Hair color composition(Type 1) and water ratio are also important to minimize hair damage. Therefore, more in-depth research is necessary to develop technique and pharmaceutical ingredients to minimize hair damage in hair coloring based on the findings of this study.
