A Study on the Effects of Makeup Education on Self-esteem and Satisfaction with Appearance
Min-jeong Ko, Sun-hyoung Kim
Abstract
This study attempted to show that makeup education is effective in improving self-esteem and satisfaction with appearance. For this, makeup education was given to young, single women in their 20s living in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do twice a week for 8 weeks, who voluntarily participated in this makeup education program. A questionnaire survey was performed before and after the educational program. The results found the following: According to an analysis of changes in self-esteem before and after makeup education, overall self-esteem increased from M=2.88 (before education) to M=3.30 (after education) with a statistically significant difference (t=-6.195, p<.001). In addition, appearance satisfaction increased by 0.47 from M=2.90 (before education) to M=3.37 (after education), showing a statistically significant difference (t=-3.916, p<.001). In sum, it was shown that a makeup education program given to young adult women in their 20s is effective in improving self-esteem and satisfaction with appearance. However, this study has a limitation in generating results because the research subject was limited to young women in their 20s only, and research data were collected from a particular region (Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do). Therefore, the results cannot be generalized.
