Abstract
This study was aimed to investigate the effects of each treatments, Essential Oil Massage and Inhalation method, on pain and joint range of motion on 24 female office workers in their 30s with lumbar Myofascial Pain Syndrome(MPS). Participants were divided into 12 subjects who received essential oil skin massage and 12 subjects who received inhalation method. We used the 3 percent of essential oils including arnica oil as carrier oil in a mixture with lavender, ginger, and rosemary (volume ratio 4:4:2). The subjects were divided into two groups essential oils massage group and inhalation methods group; the study was conducted three times a week over four weeks. Subjects from the essential oils massage group received 3 ml of essential oils at a time on their lumbar area and were massaged for five minutes. The inhalation group inhaled the oils from gauze that received a drop of oil. The subjects inhaled for two minutes with the gauze being five centimeters in front of their noses. Before and after the treatment, we measured Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Pressure Pain Threshold, lumbar extension, flexion, and lateral flexion and conducted In-Group comparison and Inter-Group comparison. Results showed significant effects on pain reduction and range of lumbar joint motion (p <.05). According to the comparison between the groups, the essential oil massage group showed a significant effect on pain reduction than the inhalation group (p <.05). The essential oil massage group showed more significant increases in the range of lumbar joint motion, flexion, and left and right lateral flexion (p <.05). In conclusion, these results demonstrate that essential oil massage and inhalation methods can be used for customer management programs and as an effective intervention when back pain associated with Myofascial Pain Syndrome occurs in beauty salons.
