Research Paper : A Study about an Obesity Brain Quotient by Brain Measurement and Difference in Age

Abstract
This study has been made to investigate the relationship between obesity and the brain wave. The obese and the non-obese groups were classified by the BMI(body mass index) of randomly chosen members who had requested their brain-wave analyses to Korea Research Institute of Jungshin Science (KRIJUS) from September 2006 to February 2007. The subjects were composed of the obese type 113 (elementary school students 23, middle and high school students 39 and adults 51) and non-obese type 304 (elementary school students 83, middle and high school students 121 and adults 99) subjects. Brain waves were measured by a portable neurofeedback system and analyzed by eight brain quotients, both of which had been developed by KRIJUS. The brain quotients based on the short-time Fourier transform had been devised to give a direct quantitative measurement of the brain activity. Some brain quotients show statistically significant difference between groups; the obese group had lower Attention Quotient left, right, Stress Quotient left, right, Brain Quotient all P=.000, obese type 113 and non-obese type 304, Attention Quotient left P=.003 right P=.000, Stress Quotient left P=.001, right P=.001. Brain Quotient P=.005, elementary school students, Attention Quotient left P=.000, right P=.000 Stress Quotient left P=.004, right P=.001. Brain Quotient P=.000 middle and high school students, and Self-Regulation Quotient P=.047 Stress Quotient right P=.007 adults. This result implies that there is a correlation between obesity and the brain wave, therefore, the brain-wave training could play an important role in the prevention and treatment of obesity.
