Research Papaer : The Kitsch Characteristics of Pop Art Expressed on Contemporary Fashion

Abstract

This study was inquired into and analyzed form, materials and color of Kitsch fashion characteristics centering around collection photographs publicized on contemporary clothing and ornament Vogue, Harper`s Bazaar between 2004 and 2005 as a popular cultural characteristics of kitsch inherent in art style of pop art. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Characteristics of kitsch in its form is to express inharmonious element, inappropriate element, playful element, etc by combining simple and geometrical patterns. 2) In materials, kitsch expresses its texture or pattern with use of artificial synthetic fiber materials, or combination of heterogeneous materials, or adds aesthetic image of kitsch using cheap materials that can be easily met in daily lives such as newspapers or can drinking water. 3) In color, coloration by vivid and strong contrast dominates kitsch`s characteristics, and kitsch shows floweriness with excessive use of strong, sensational primary colors, and is composed in inappropriate combination of clothing, thus, kitsch fashion design is expressed in new aesthetic view point.
