| Abstract |
|
Human pursuit of beauty is a generalized phenomenon over every ages and every societies in human history. This is a very important area which is emerged via connecting with the sensitivity of beauty and the desire of beauty. This may be an important power of beauty pursuit and played a major roll of development of human history. The common understanding of beauty and the history of beauty pursuit may be similar in the orient and the west. However it may be natural that the understanding of beauty reveals different aspect according to the social or cultural difference. It will be meaningful to predict how the meaning of traditional esthetics and the modern esthetic trend change. This study tries to observe how the oriental and the western understandings of beauty have developed and played the function for modern esthetic recognition and to predict how the future trends of beauty will change. The outstanding feature of the oriental beauty ideology is that there is rejection symptoms for beauty, since the beauty has played negative rolls or functions in oriental history. This may be a warning that many problems can be occurred due to the beauty, even though the beauty itself is a desirable aspect. The western beauty ideology reveals somewhat speculative feature because it was mainly originated in arrangement of esthetic values for art works rather than approaches for physically appeared beauty. This has made an epoch-making changeover in the modern philosophy. The mode of the post-modernism has enlarged the scope of beauty and applied the understanding dimension for beauty to more general and epoch-making fields. This mode rejects previous ideology that regard the beauty as the minor portion and declares the beauty to be the discussion included in the center of human life. |
