Young Hee Noh, Mi Ja Han
Abstract
This research, investigating status quo of nationwide beauty-related institutions, is to provide framework for raising professional human resources and systemizing beauty education. Institutions subject to investigate were limited to beauty high schools, technology high schools, junior colleges, universities and institutions where professional beauty bachelor`s degree under Academic Credit Bank is granted through and where license is guaranteed by graduation without exam. We have examined not only regional distribution of institutions and their entrance quota but also official name of departments registered for beauty-related junior colleges, universities, graduate schools and Academic Credit Bank System and their ratio of full-time professors. The final results are shown below. First, beauty-related institutions are spread unevenly throughout the nation. 17.4% of high schools and graduate schools are centered in Seoul and 20.1% of junior colleges and universities are concentrated in Gyeongsang province. Second, as 24 schools are established from 2000 to 2004, beauty-related high schools have grown substantially. There are seven ways of sanctioning these schools. Third, departments of junior colleges and universities, beauty-related majors belong to, are like this: 31.0% of junior colleges include the majors into the department of natural science while they belong to department of art in 38.2%of universities, which is the largest percentage. Official titles of the department are so diverse that junior colleges use 19 different names and 36.5% of them, the largest, use the name, `Department of Beauty Coordination. Besides, universities used 17 different names for them. Fourth, there were two junior colleges and 240 freshmen in 1991, while, in 2009, there are 116 departments of 101 junior colleges with 11,657 freshmen. Similarly, 34 departments of 30 universities admitted 1,873 students in 2009. Fifth, overall ratio of full-time professors is following: having 2 full-time professors was the largest in the case of junior colleges as 33 departments of them did, while having 4 full-time professors of 12 departments was the largest in the case of universities. Taking all the results into account, we need standardization of sanction system of beauty-related high schools. Also, beauty study should be established as an independent department, which has same official name and systemized curriculum. At the same time, for competitiveness of beauty education, increase in the number of full-time professors should be prioritized, and beauty license given to graduates of each institution without exam should have effective way.
Key Words: Beauty-Related Institutions, Beauty-Related Majors, Quota of Each Year, Ratio of Full-Time Professors
