Abstract

This study was performed to reveal the relations between the diffuse hair loss and the mental (emotional) states by investigating the degrees of stress, self-confidence and depression. The subjects were 212 cases and the survey was conducted from November 2008 to December. As for the general characteristics with the diffuse hair loss, the public office worker in the occupation and more 4,000,000 won earned group in the salary showed the highest occurred rates of the diffuse hair loss. The stressful feeling (2.32 points/2.10 points) and the depressed feeling (1.57 points/1.37 points) were significantly higher in diffuse hair loss group compared with control, and the self-confidence (2.97 points/3.10 points) were significantly lower in diffuse hair loss group compared with control, As for the diffuse hair loss group, the initiate of the symptom was 3-5 years before and the cause was the genetics, which were the most common responses. In addition, the level of stress by the depilation was higher in innate case (2.39 points) than in acquired case (2.21 points), and the degree of caring about the depilation was significantly high in the response of "very cared" (2.39 points, 3.37 points) on the stress and the on self-confidence that meaned the levels of stress and self-confidence were influenced by the depilation. The level of the depressed was the significantly highest in over 6 years-depilation group. In conclusion, the depilation, itself, can badly influence the (mental) emotional states such stress, self-confidence and depression, so we need to look into the various solutions to solve not only physical depilation, but also the mental difficulty caused by the depilation for the better welling-being.
