Abstract
Although there aren`t any known evidences in literatures on where the aesthetic interests and actions on hair style definitely began, the Braid Style can be discovered in Egypt, the cradle of ancient civilization. Generally speaking, customers as well as beauty artists thought the Up-Style as a standardized form thus matching with Hanbok or worn only in special occasions. This paper intends to suggest that even the general public can fully express their individualities through diverse techniques and style with the Up-Style. In addition, this paper attempts to transform primitive styles in ancient times into fancy-free and natural styles applying consumer`s desire on the basis of modern techniques and modes. Therefore, results of the modern Up-Style based on the ancient Greek and Roman hair styles as a benchmark are as follows. Greek hair styles are featured by winding the front, top and back of the head (nape) three-fold using unique triangular cloth as a hair accessory or hair band. On the basis of these styles as a motive, feminine as well as natural and gorgeous images with modern sensation and feeling were expressed using a ring. Psyche knot and Grecian coil style seem to be representative hair styles of this age seem. First, Up-Style is highly regarded by taking in aesthetics including young generations who freely express their personalities as well as everyone`s confidence, satisfaction of desire and self realization. Meanwhile, regarding hair style of Roman period, as can be seen in the hair type of wife of ancient Roman emperor Octavius, its typical example was the cornrows(reggae hair) technique taking motive from comprehensive expression of roll and braid, which is making waves among young people who want to freely express their modern sense and feelings. Second, Up-Style was expressed from the past to the present by noble women in making a voluminous air of glamour with the help of beauty artists. In short, the Up-Style that emphasized art has developed along with the start of human civilization and even by the passage of time, its basis has remained unchanged thus sharing a common denominator that enables research on ancient hair styles as of today. To this end, I hope this serves as an influential educational material in the field of beauty that can be easily applied by everyone by researching and developing more diverse techniques in the future.
