Abstract

In this study, we estimated a possibility that the white dandelion extract may be a functional material for cosmetic. Commonly, the physiological activity of the white dandelion was higher when extracted with ethanol than when extracted with hot water. DPPH radical scavenging ability of the ethanol extract and the hot water extract was 0.94 mg/mL and 2.26 mg/mL, respectively, on the SC50 basis. SOD-like activity of the ethanol extract was higher than the hot water extract. The SOD-like activity of 6.25 mg/mL of the ethanol extract was about 43%. 10 mg/mL of the ethanol extract inhibited about 54% of NO generation. In antibacterial activity by the disc diffusion assay against P. acnes and S. epidermidis, 20 mg/disc of the ethanol extract formed 16.40 mm and 14.53 mm of clear zone. However, tyrosinase inhibitory activity of the hot water extract was more effective than the ethanol extract. 2.5 mg/mL of the hot water extract inhibited 63.1% of tyrosinase activity. In the cytotoxicity measurement by MTT assay, each extract of white dandelion was exhibited viabilities of 110.5~147.8% as nontoxic result in every tested concentration. In conclusion, the white dandelion extract that has antibacterial, antioxidation, and skin whitening activity was proved to be a valuable material for functional cosmetic.
