A Study on the Up-style Design Applying H. W?lfflin`s Principles

Abstract

This study attempts to examine up-style and Wolfflin`s principles, express Wolfflin`s principles-applied up-style as illustration, and make a real product. Then this study presents the possibility for the visual expression form of up-style by Wolfflin`s principles to be applied as basic theory to give artistic value. As a result, creative hair styles could be expressed using up-style techniques such as twists, braids, knots, overlaps, loops, and rolls based on form, texture, and color which are design components. Furthermore it was possible to form the theoretical basis of artistic and creative up-style design and express novel aesthetic impression by representing linear picturesque expression, flat and depth expression, closed and open expression, multiplicity and unity expression, and distinctly and indistinctly expression which is Wolfflin`s principles using a variety of up-style technique. The up-style could be broken out of the existing uniform and functional styles, apply a variety of design elements, and be expressed as the formative arts. This study contributes to showing the possibility to be applied as basic theory for infinite creative world by using Wolfflin`s principles in up-style which is a genre of formative arts of human body that designer`s inherent sensitivity, creativity, and professional techniques and skills should act infinitely.
