Soo Gyeong Shin, Mee Ok Choi
Abstract
This study aims to examine appearance orientation according to the menopausal status in middle-aged women in their forties and fifties and offer effective methods for skin health care to help them improve the quality of life. The subjects were women from 35 years old to 59 years old residing in Jeonnam and Mokpo. A questionnaire survey were conducted with them. The period of survey was about five months from November 11, 2014 to April 8, 2015 and 310 questionnaires were used for the final data. The SPSSWIN 18.0 program was used for statistics processing. Frequency analysis was conducted to analyze the menopausal status of the subjects and chi-square(x2) test was used to examine differences in general characteristics and health and skin conditions according to the menopausal status. Also, t-test was applied to analyze differences in appearance orientation, skin health care knowledge, skin health care attitudes, and skin health care behaviors according to the menopausal status. The results of the study were as follows. First, health concerns were high in both groups irrespective of the menopausal status. While postmenopausal women had high stress in health, diseases, and economic problems, premenopausal women showed high stress in economic problems and future problems. The findings indicated that women``s concerns about health and diseases became higher after menopause. Second, for differences in appearance orientation according to the menopausal status, while there was no difference in appearance concerns between both groups, concerns about a body shape were high in premenopausal women. Third, there was a significant difference in skin health care attitudes, the importance of skin care, and the importance of skin health according to the menopausal status. Skin health care attitudes, the importance of skin care, and the importance of skin health all were high in premenopausal women. Therefore, while postmenopausal women had higher concerns about health and diseases, premenopausal women showed higher concerns about a body shape and the importance of skin health care. There was no difference in appearance concerns between two groups. It suggested that appearance concerns were high in both groups irrespective of the menopausal status. Although this study analyzed differences according to the menopausal status in middle-aged women in their forties and fifties, further research should be conducted with narrower age groups considering an age difference between premenopausal women and postmenopausal women.
