Research Paper : The Amount of Metal Contents in a Hair and The Phenomenon of Protein Expression Caused by a Arsenic Exposure
Young Hee Ahn, Young Jin So
Abstract
Arsenic(As) is a metal and a human carcinogen distributed widely in living environment. Exposure to high concentration of As may cause arsenic poisoning and neurologic disorder. If chronically exposed to As in living environment, As may cause cardiovascular diseases, melanin pigmentation, disorder of central nervous system(CNS). This experimental study used male BALB/C mice which were divided into four groups including control, 50ppb, 500ppb, and 5,000ppb of As treated groups. After 21 days of As treatment, hair and blood samples were taken from the mice so as to measure content of metals such as As, Cu, and Zn. As a result, it was found that As administration group showed higher content of As, Cu, and Zn in hair compared with control, and the 5,000ppb As group showed higher content with statistically significance. In order to demonstrate expression of protein in the back skin of As-administered mice, it was found that As administration groups showed a slightly higher expression of NOS 1 protein than control, but there was no significant difference. In order to demonstrate expression of protein in the cerebral cortex of As-administered mice, it was found that As administration groups showed lower expression of NOS 1 protein in cerebral cortex than control, but there was no significant difference between them. In conclusion, high level of As exposure may deferentially influence the metal distribution in hair.
